The companies in the MetLife, Inc. group ("MetLife") strongly believe in protecting the confidentiality and security of information we collect about individuals. This policy describes how some of the companies in our group use the information we receive about you if you become a MetLife customer, apply for any of our products or services, or register with us.
If you access our websites for information relating to our products and services or to purchase any of our products and services, our list below provides further information on how we collect, use and share the information you provide to us online.
What we know about you we obtain mostly from you when you apply for one of our products or services. But we may also have to find out more about you from other sources in order to make sure that what we know about you is correct and complete. These sources may include your adult relatives, employers, health care providers, credit reference agencies, other insurers and other financial services providers, consumer reporting and anti-fraud agencies. Some of our sources may provide us with reports relating to you.
The security and confidentiality of your information is extremely important to us. That’s why we have technical, administrative, and physical security measures in place to protect your personal information from unauthorised access and improper use. Our employees are trained to take care in handling your information. They may obtain information about you only when there is a good reason to do so. We also take steps to secure our computer databases and to safeguard the information we have about you.
We may use the information we have about you to help us serve you better. We may use and share your information with other companies in the MetLife group to:
- Help us evaluate your request for a MetLife product or service
- Help us process claims and other transactions
- Confirm or correct what we know about you
- Help us prevent fraud, money laundering, terrorism and other crimes by verifying what we know about you
- Perform research for us
- Help us comply with the law by, for example, sharing your information with the police or fraud agencies to prevent fraud
- Audit our business
We may share your information with other third parties for these purposes. For example, for processing an application or any claim, we may share your information with credit reference agencies, police, consumer reporting and anti-fraud agencies. This may include other insurers and financial services providers to prevent and detect fraudulent and exaggerated claims.
When we share your personal information with others who perform business services for us, they are required to take appropriate steps to protect this information and may only use the information for the purpose of performing those services.
Other reasons we may share what we know about you include:
- Sharing your information with your financial services advisor so that they can advise and service you
- Sharing information with other financial services providers where we provide or administer products and services with carefully selected businesses, such as where we distribute another business’ products or services, or where we reinsure
- Doing what a court or government agency requires us to do; for example, complying with a search warrant or court order or acting as required or permitted by applicable law or regulation
- Giving information to the government so that it can decide whether you may get benefits that it will have to pay for
We will only share your information within the MetLife group or with carefully selected businesses to market products and services to you.
Generally, we will let you see the information that we hold on you if you ask us in writing. We may make a small charge for this service. Due to legal privilege, we may not be able to show you anything that we learned in connection with a claim or legal proceeding. If you tell us that the information we hold on you is incorrect, we will review it and if we agree with you, we will correct our records. If we do not agree with you we will let you know. If you wish, you can tell us in writing that you believe our records still to be incorrect and we will include your statement when we give your information to anyone outside MetLife.
